Having missed only one GBL race … who is a better starter than Dr. David Huerter of Pittsburg, Kansas. Not only is he an avid runner, but has been a respected community leader for over 50 years. Dr. Huerter had an internal medicine practice for 24 years; left “retirement” to be an internist at Community Health Center for 13 years, and presently visits nursing homes twice a week for CHCSEK. He and his wife Maureen have 6 children, 17 grandkids, and 3 great grandchildren. We applaud, respect and honor Dr. Huerter for being a perfect GBL example for this year’s slogan: “Give Everything…Expect Nothing”.Since 2010 we have been honoring our hardworking high school seniors, athletes and youth volunteer groups. From 45 scholarship applications, the following 12 students from our Crawford County high schools have been selected to receive our scholarship award:· Pittsburg HS: Jacqueline Hall, Oscar Ruiz, Kiran Navaratnam, Indiana Grotheer, Savannah Grotheer, Eve Moss and Noah Rodgers.· Frontenac HS: Cole Niederklein.· St. Mary’s Colgan HS: Lily Brown, Cooper Simmons.· Girard HS: Ainsley Norton.· Southeast HS: Kassidy Fox.Additionally, two outstanding football players have been selected to receive our athletic scholarship awards. The PHS Football Purple Dragons Inspirational Player of the Year is awarded to Webb Fern who was the teams quarterback; and is also an excellent baseball player who has signed to play with Coffeyville Community College next year. For the Kpreps/GBL Kansas Player of the Year award all- state linebacker Dawson Kindler from Gardner-Edgeton HS has been selected. Dawson who led his team to their first 6A State Championship, is also one of the nation’s top high school javelin throwers and plans to continue his track career at Emporia State. One of the primary goals of the GBL Foundation is to continue support for youth volunteerism. This year 7 youth programs have been selected to receive support grants. Hundreds of volunteers and workers will participate in the following activities:· Special Olympics track and field event at Pitt State.· GBL Club (USD 250) supporting numerous causes at PHS and in the community.· Dream Big Little One Assoc. working with Columbus HS students to construct bed frames for children in need.· Fostering Connections (Pittsburg) sponsoring a golfing fun day for local foster children and families.· Cherry St. Youth Center (Chanute) providing students and seniors with quality companionship at local nursing homes.· Josiah Fletcher Foundation in partnership with PSU Music Dept. supporting its inaugural Jazz Camp for SEK student musicians.· Miner Hall Museum Foundation sponsoring a work day for students and adults to improve the playground facilities at the Franklin Community Park. Each year we select a slogan to represent the mission goals of the Foundation. Our slogan this year is “Give Everything…Expect Nothing”. After Dylan’s football career ended at PHS and KSU, he played and promoted American football in Dresden, Germany and Milan, Italy. He continued his adventures by volunteering with the WWOOF organization where he worked on organic farms in New Zealand. As is generally the case with volunteerism, the volunteer “expects nothing”, but receives life long memories.A special thanks goes out to all of our Corporate Sponsors and GBL Friends who have provided their donations to support our programs…we are very grateful!!!Hope to see you at the event. For any questions, please contact Dennis Meier 620-249-3838....
